Albemarle County, Virginia, was created in 1744 from portions of Goochland and Louisa counties. Woods reviews the early history of Albemarle County in the first part of this work and then goes on to give brief genealogical sketches of a number of early families, including Anderson, Brown, Carr, Carter, Clark, Dawson, Durrett, Fretwell, Garland, Garrett, Gooch, Hamner, Harris, Watson, Wingfield, Wood, and Woods. The rich appendixes to the volume include lists of frontier militia, Revolutionary soldiers, military organizations of the county, county officers, emigrants from Albemarle to other states, and a necrology from 1744 to 1890.
