Guide to the Genealogical Resources of Italy - Region of Sicily by George E. Ott; ISBN 1933194-16-2; 8.5x11; 230 pages; hard bound; Heritage Creations; 2004

George Ott's book on research in Sicilian genealogical resources gives all kinds of information never before compiled for the genealogist. Following is a short list what it can do for anyone researching Sicilian ancestry.

  • A wealth of information for each incorporated town/comune including: Population, Postal Code, Phone Code, Hamlets/Frazione under its jurisdiction, Town hall with address and phone number, Library and cemetery information, and Catholic parish information..
  • A listing of the Family History Library collection for each town with microfilm numbers.
  • A listing of State Archives and Diocesan Archives with addresses and phone numbers.
  • Maps of each province showing town locations.
  • Web site information for towns, provinces and region.
  • A listing of Provincial records available at the Family History Library with microfilm numbers.

In the front of the volume, Mr. Ott has also included a chapter on visiting the old country, as well as a How To section with detailed descriptions of the following:

  • Frazione/Hamlet
  • Postal Code
  • Civil Registers
  • Churches
  • Patron Saint and Feast Day
  • Town Hall
  • Library

  • Town Web Site
  • Riveli

See what has been said about Guide to the Genealogical Resources of Italy - Region of Sicily at the end of the Town Listing below.

Following is a list, laid out alphabetically by province, of the towns (comunes) described in this volume. I left out all the diacritical marks, as they were ending up as symbols when uploaded to the Internet. Note that there are also hundreds of hamlets (fraziones) listed in the book under the appropriate town (commune), allowing the user to locate the appropriate records when researching the family.

What has been said about Guide to the Genealogical Resources of Italy - Region of Sicily

Guide to the Genealogical Resources of Italy - Region of Sicily is very well done and should be of great value to anyone doing research in Sicily, especially in the island's very smallest villages and towns.

The inclusion of each commune's mailing address, telephone number and parish names along with the listing of those records that have been filmed, cross-referenced to the corresponding film number at the Family History Library, should all be tremendous time-savers.

The provincial maps, showing the location of each commune, and the inclusion of the names of every frazione associated with each commune, are both very nice touches.

I looked up the three tiny villages in Palermo province in which I have an ancestral interest, and immediately learned things about the towns and the available records that I had not known before.

The information provided for each province, including addresses, telephone numbers, diocese information and information on the availability of military records, should all prove valuable to the genealogical researcher.

I can highly recommend this publication to anyone with a genealogical interest in Sicily.

______________

George Ott has brought together between the covers of one handy volume:

  • An atlas and gazetteer of Sicily
  • A directory of the island's principle record repositories, and
  • A guide to Sicilian resources available on microfilm at the Family History Library.
  • He provides the postal, e-mail, and website addresses and telephone numbers not only for the state archives (and their sezioni, or branches) that serve the nine provinces of Sicily, but for the civil and religious repositories of every one of the island's 390 comuni (towns) as well.
  • Particularly useful features include:

    • listing the frazione (villages) that fall under the administration of a commune
    • providing the Family History Library numbers for all of the records that have been microfilmed
    • including information about diocesan as well as parochial repositories, and pointing out when military records, parish records, and riveli (tax lists, also called catasti) are available.
This is an indispensable reference tool for anyone researching Sicilian ancestors.
