The Settlement of the German Coast of Louisiana and Creoles of German Descent, With a New Preface, Chronology and Index by Jack Belsom; By J. Hanno. Deiler; 170 pp.; paperback; Published: 1909, 1969; Reprinted: 2004; ISBN: 9780806300924; Item # CF1405D

Deiler devotes the preliminary sections of this work to the early German families and their settlements in Louisiana, while nearly one-half of it lists, along with genealogical notices, the "Names of German Habitants on Both Banks of the Mississippi Above New Orleans," as based on the official census of 1724, and a roster of "Additional German Names...Not in the [1724] Census." Other sections are devoted to names in other censuses, Germans from Maryland, and Creoles of German Descent, with subsections on language and name changes. Over 2,000 names are contained in the new 18-page Index, which lists every name in the book, with variant spellings. Appended to the Preface is a list of further sources for research, both in published and manuscript form. Finally, an added chronology of events assists the reader in relating the incidents mentioned by Deiler to the entire colonial period in Louisiana. Historians and genealogical researchers interested in the early German and Swiss settlers of Louisiana will find Deiler's work to be an indispensable reference.
